Developmental Biology: Notching the Hindbrain
نویسنده
چکیده
One of the best-characterized lineage restrictions in developing vertebrates occurs between adjacent -rhombomeres of the hindbrain. It was recently shown that cells at the boundaries of zebrafish rhombomeres also differ from non-boundary cells in their migratory abilities, a difference driven by Notch signaling.

Evolutionary conservation of hindbrain segmentation in vertebrates. On pages 526–538 of this issue, Parker et al. explore the origin and diversifi cation of the Hox gene regulatory network for vertebrate hindbrain segmentation and patterning. The cover depicts transgenic embryos of three different species – sea lamprey, mouse and zebrafi sh – expressing fl uorescent proteins in the developing h...
متن کاملHindbrain patterning revisited: timing and effects of retinoic acid signalling.
Retinoids play a critical role in patterning, segmentation, and neurogenesis of the posterior hindbrain and it has been proposed that they act as a posteriorising signal during hindbrain development. Until now, direct evidence that endogenous retinoid signalling acts through a gradient to specify cell fates along the anteroposterior axis has been missing. Two recent studies tested the requireme...
متن کاملThe dorsal spinal cord and hindbrain: From developmental mechanisms to functional circuits.
Neurons of the dorsal hindbrain and spinal cord are central in receiving, processing and relaying sensory perception and participate in the coordination of sensory-motor output. Numerous cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie neuronal development in both regions of the nervous system are shared. We discuss here the mechanisms that generate neuronal diversity in the dorsal spinal cord a...
متن کاملBeyond the neckless phenotype: influence of reduced retinoic acid signaling on motor neuron development in the zebrafish hindbrain.
Retinoic acid (RA) has been identified as a key signal involved in the posteriorization of vertebrate neural ectoderm. The main biosynthetic enzyme responsible for RA signaling in the hindbrain and spinal cord is Raldh2. However, neckless/raldh2-mutant (nls) zebrafish exhibit only mild degrees of anteriorization in the neural ectoderm, compared to full vitamin A deficiency in amniotes and the R...
متن کاملHoxb3 negatively regulates Hoxb1 expression in mouse hindbrain patterning.
The spatial regulation of combinatorial expression of Hox genes is critical for determining hindbrain rhombomere (r) identities. To address the cross-regulatory relationship between Hox genes in hindbrain neuronal specification, we have generated a gain-of-function transgenic mouse mutant Hoxb3(Tg) using the Hoxb2 r4-specific enhancer element. Interestingly, in r4 of the Hoxb3(Tg) mutant where ...
